Ginseng can reduce cancer-related tiredness

Image
Ginseng may help long-standing cancer patients to ward off the tiredness caused by the condition, found researchers from the Mayo Clinic Cancer Centre in US. The regular intake of high doses of the ginseng over two months significantly reduced cancer-related tiredness in patients in comparison to any other medication. Breast milk may protect catching HIV

Image
Breast milk could protect children from virus of AIDS, suggests a new research by University of North Carolina in the US. The mother’s milk had strong anti-viral effect. The research team carried out a study on genetically modified humanised mice which can acquire HIV similarly as humans. When the genetically modified mice were given the virus in human breast milk, it was found that mice were not infected. Various tests showed that even though some of their offspring acquired HIV virus from breastfeeding, yet their mother’s milk had a strong anti-viral effect. The research provides significant insight into the amazing ability of breast milk to destroy HIV and prevent its transmission. No child should ever be infected with HIV because it is breastfed.  Breastfeeding provides critical nutrition and protection from other infections, especially where clean water for infant formula is scarce, explained study leader Dr Victor Garcia. Declines were also seen in areas used for attention & executive functions, long term memory & movement A neurologist Professor Paul Thompson said, “That's a big loss of tissue and it depletes your cognitive reserves, putting you at much greater risk of Alzheimer's and other diseases that attack the brain. But the new test involves a quick biopsy of the womb lining, taken through the vagina while the patient is awake. Researchers from Australia & Jordan tried the new method on 99 patients. They tested the samples taken for the presence of nerve fibres which predict endometriosis, with almost 100 % accuracy. They said that there is still a substantial delay in the diagnosis of endometriosis in most countries. The length of time from the onset of symptoms to the definite diagnosis is often quite long, with an average of six to ten years in...

Smoking can ruin your taste buds

Image
In a new study scientists have found that smokers are less likely to enjoy a mouthwatering meal than others who avoid smoking. Their taste buds have less sensitive due to smoking. Smoking deadens the ability to taste. Pavlidis Pavlos led a team from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki who used electrical stimulation to test the taste threshold of the soldiers. [Photo Credit] They also measured the number and shape of a kind of taste bud called fungiform papillae . They detected statically important difference between the taste thresholds of smokers and non-smokers. Differences were also seen in the shape of the taste buds and the extent to which they were connected to blood vessels. Applying an electrical current to the tongue produced a unique metallic taste. Measuring how much current was needed before the taste was noticed provided a way of determining taste sensitivity. The 28 smokers tested had lower taste scores than the 34 non-smokers. Their fungiform papillae were also fl...
