Magic ingredients of mother’s milk protects babies' intestines

Breast milk is very useful for newborn baby. Now scientists have founds a molecule in mother’s milk that protects & repairs the delicate intestines of newborn babies called pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI). This ingredient is found at its highest levels in colostrums that is known as the milk produced in first few days after the baby’s birth.

PSTI- pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor is a molecule normally found in the pancreas & protects it from being damaged by the digestive enzymes it produces. It seems to play a similar protective role in the gut. Scientists believe that the lining of a newborn baby’s gut is particularly vulnerable to damage as it has never been exposed to food or drink. The new study highlights the importance of breastfeeding in the first few days after baby’s birth.

Scientists from queen Mary University found small amounts of pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI) in all the samples of breast milk they tested but it was seven times more concentrated in samples of the milk produced in first few days after the baby’s birth called colostrum. The ingredient was not found in formula milk. They examined the effects of pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI) on human intestinal cells in the lab.

They also found that it could prevent further damage by stopping the cells of the intestine from self-destroying. It suggests that PSTI could reduce damage by 75%. They also found that pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI) is produced in the breast but until now they did not know exactly why. “We know that breast milk is made up of a host of different ingredients and we also know that there are a number of health benefits for babies who are breast-fed,” said Ray Playford a professor of queen Mary University.

Now it is proved by the new study that ingredients of mother’s milk protects & repairs the babies' delicate intestines in readiness for the onslaught of all the food & drink that are to come. It reinforces the benefits of breast feeding, especially in the first few days after birth.
