How to cure Myasthenia Gravis through yoga?

Myasthenia Gravis : It is chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease in which there is immense weakness in the muscles of arms, hands ,neck, legs & all other parts of the body. Myasthenia gravis is muscle weakness that increases during periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Muscles that control eye and eyelid movements , facial expression , chewing , talking , breathing and swallowing are often affected but not always.

This disease is caused by a defect in the transmission of nerve impulses to muscles. In myasthenia gravis the neuro-muscular junction of human body get blocked & the communication between the muscles & nerves are disturbed results in weakening of muscles. The first noticeable symptoms of myasthenia gravis may be weakness of the eye muscles and the eyelids tend to droop.



Medical management : Myasthenia gravis can be controlled. Some medications improve neuromuscular transmission and increase muscle strength, and some suppress the production of abnormal antibodies. These medications must be used with careful medical follow up because they may cause major side effects.

How yoga helpful for Myasthenia Gravis : Yoga exercises & pranyamas are found to be very useful in treating this disease. Yoga exercises help to stretch the body which increase the flexibility as well as strengthen the muscles of the body, which become weak due to MG. Yoga exercises improve blood circulation & remove carbondioxide from the body & provide oxygenated blood to every part of the body.

Pranayama – yoga breathing : Pranayamas are also helpful because the onset of MG often lead to mild depression but the practice of breathing exercises like, Nadi- Shodhan , Anulom-Vilom , Deep breathing & mild Kapalbhati help to remove depression & relax the mind as well as the body. Meditation also brings more positive thinking & make the feeling more stronger to control over MG.

Nutrition for Myasthenia Gravis : Along with exercises & breathing practices eating habits should also be altered. Simple , nourishing , no stimulating foods , including plenty of fresh fruits & lightly cooked vegetable, particularly greens. Asparagus is considered excellent since it contains certain natural steroid-like nutritious elements, which help strengthen the weakened muscles caused by MG. Take whole meal grains , sprouts & pulses in places eggs & meats. Make sure the food should has a blend of all necessary vitamins.
