Regular lovemaking may help damaged sperm

The way to boost fertility could be as simple as making love every day. So forget complicated medical treatments, expensive pills & potions. A new study has claimed that daily lovemaking boosts both the quality of a man's sperm & its ability to move, potentially helping those wanting to become fathers. For men with fertility problems, some doctors are prescribing a very conventional way to have more sex.

In a study of 118 Australian men with damaged sperm, doctors found that having sex every day for a week significantly reduced the amount of DNA damage in their patients' sperm. The level of damage fell by 26 %, sperm levels remained relatively high & the sperm even swam better. These changes were substantial & statistically significant. Making love regularly is said to prevent the build-up of damaged sperm.

Many fertility experts suggest men abstain from sex before their partners have in-vitro fertilization, to try to elevate their sperm counts. Sperm quality can also be improved if men don't smoke, drink moderately, exercise, or get more antioxidants. Experts think sex helps reduce the DNA damage in sperm by getting it out of the body quickly. If sperm is in the body for too long, it has a higher chance of getting damaged.

Further research is needed to see whether the improvement in men's sperm quality translates into pregnancy rates but other studies have shown the relationship between sperm DNA damage & pregnancy rates. Men wanting to be fathers in their 30s & 40s are advised to try to capture some of the passion of their youth. It is thought that flushing sperm out of the body stops it accumulating the DNA damage that can cut the odds of pregnancy and raise the risk of miscarriage.

Experts said the various studies into the subject had failed to reach a consensus & warned that overdoing it could cause sperm count to plummet, cutting the chances of pregnancy. They advised that couples should seek the advice of their doctor.
