Prevent painful condition ‘Endometriosis’ through Yoga

Endometriosis : ‘Endo’ means inside & ‘metra’ means womb. It is medical condition in women in which endometrial cells are deposited in areas outside the uterine cavity. Endometrial cells that normally line the womb are found elsewhere in the body, such as the outside of the fallopian tubes, the ovaries and the bladder. These cells continue to respond to monthly hormonal fluctuations , causing bleeding within the body, which can be extremely painful and can cause scar tissue to form.

Causes of Endometriosis : It is typically seen in women during their reproductive years. It can affect 5% to 10% of women. It is not known exactly what causes endometriosis. It may arise because of retrograde menstruation. When during a period , blood flows back towards the fallopian tubes rather than leaving the body in the usual way.

Dysfunction of immune may allow endometriosis to develop in those women who are unable to fight off the endometriosis cells , may enable endometriosis cells to appear in body parts where they wouldn’t normally be found.

Symptoms of Endometriosis : It may include painful or heavy periods , pain during intercourse , pelvic pain , low backache & infertility. Even many women don’t get any symptoms at all & are not aware of that they have it. It is most common between the ages of 25 to 40.

Medical management of Endometriosis : Many painkillers & anti-inflammatory medicines can be used to relieve symptoms of endometriosis. It also involve hormonal drugs which suppress ovulation & menstruation. They help to regress the disease. In some women who have completed their families & the non-surgical treatment is not able to cure the disease , then surgery may be recommended.

Yogic management of Endometriosis : Though yoga can’t cure this disease but it helps to reduce the stress & pain of this disease. Start with very simple postures , building up slowly & watching carefully for any aggravation or discomfort.

During pain , bloating & discomfort practice poses like Supt Virasana – Reclined Hero pose & Supt Baddha Konasana – Reclined Bound Angle Pose that gently open & stretch the abdomen & pelvic muscles. Women with endometriosis when they are not mensurating should practice poses like Baddha Konasana - Bound Angle Pose & Salamba Sarvangasana - Shoulderstand. These are helpful to balance the endocrine system.

Start with some stretching poses & see how much stretch body can tolerate. Practice with some stretches pose like Bhujangasana - Cobra Pose and Salabhasana - Locust Pose & gradually work up to Dhanurasana – Bow pose , Ustrasana – Camel Pose & Urdhva Dharnurasna – Upward Bow Pose according to capacity of one’s body.

Similarly , twisted stretch which stimulate the liver & tissues , beneficial in endometriosis are starting with very open twist like Marichyasana - Marichi's Pose , or Parivrtta Janu Sirsasana -Revolved Head-to-Knee Pose. Gradually move to more intense twist like Ardha Matsyendrasana -Half Lord of the Fishes Pose.

For strengthen the abdominal muscles , start with lying on the back & focusing on drawing the navel toward the spine as you exhale. Gradually move into more intense pose like Paripurna Navasana -Full Boat Pose. Women with endometriosis can practice Power Yoga also.

Never practice Bandhas like Uddiyan Bandha & Mool Bandha can change the pressure in the abdominen & pelvic region , which can have an effect on the organs. Since the organs may already be under stress from scar tissue , the practice of the bandhas are very risky in this condition.
