Psycholigical Effects Of Meditation

For thousand of years men have speculated about the nature of meditative & smadhi states of human consciousness. Only within the last 30-40 years , however , have scientist gained the technical ability to describe the Psychological & Biochemical correlates of Meditation & Samadhi.
R.K Wallace was the first American Scientist to undertake an extensive examination of the state of consciousness experienced in Trance dental Meditation.

Similarly, some studies were also carried out at AIIMS Delhi by Dr. Chinna & other On the effects of underground smadhi & Meditation to provide scientific firm- footing for the utility of meditation in daily life by common man.
In the light of various scientific firm- footing / studies in last 3-4 decades in India & abroad , the Psychological effects
are discusses as below :

1. Oxygen Consumption & Metabolic Rate : Dr.R.K Wallace & Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School in 1970 &1971 studied the effects of TM (Trance dental Meditation) & found that Oxygen consumption decreased in all subjects within 5 minutes , after the onset of Meditation .
These scientist also reported that Oxygen consumption decreased about 15% after 6-7 hours of sleep. This means that the metabolic rate at which the system consumes energy is more sharply reduced during TM (Trance dental Meditation) than during sleep.

2. Skin Resistance : This is well known fact that the wakeful state of human mind provides a lesser skin Resistance during stressful situation. Wallace & Benson , in their article of Psychology of Meditation , reported that skin resistance increased during markedly.
The Galvano Skin Resistance(GSR) showed an average increase of about 250% during TM (Trance dental Meditation) , going as high as 500% ,as apposed to a 100 to 200% increased during sleep. This reveals that Meditation provides a deep state of relaxation to body as compared to sleep & helps to counter the effect of stress.

3. Blood Lactate Level & Fatigue : A 1969 study " Biochemistry of Anxiety " showed that a high concentration of lactate ion in blood can be produced anxiety symptoms in person in known history of anxiety neurosis. During TM (Trance dental Meditation) the blood lactate level was found to decrease an average of 33% & to remain low for a considerable length of time thereafter.
Moreover Wallace & Benson noted that it is significant that patients with hypertension show higher blood lactate level in resting state than patients without hypertension. This reveals that the decline level of lactate concentration during
TM (Trance dental Meditation) also helps to lower down high blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

4. Cardiovascular Aspects : Significant findings have been reported by scientist by practice of Meditation in respect of heart patient also. The deeply relaxed reproduced reduced heart rate , pulse rate , cardiac output etc. to a greater extent (30 to 50%) to provide a resting phase to the heart. The blood pressure has also been significantly reduced in hypertensive patients along with reduced blood lactate level.

5. Endocrinal aspect : The activity of Adrenal ,Thyroid , Pituitary glands are increased to cope with stressful situation by the body. The regular practice of TM (Trance dental Meditation) inhibits the hyperactivity of these glands & provides the hormones for increased anabolic state , mental creativity & hormones of +ve diagnoses.
