The Fish Pose - Matsyasana wonders for Respiratory System

Meaning : The Sanskrit word Matsya means fish, this is called Matsyasana because the posture of the body looks like a fish. The fish , was one of the incarnation of the Hindu God Vishnu , assumed this form to save the world from the flood. The fish pose(Matsyasana) does wonder for respiratory system & creates a great expansion & stretching of the chest which relieve upper respiratory congestion as well as benefits the heart.

The fish pose(Matsyasana) normalizes the function of the Thyroid , Pineal & Adrenal glands. By lifting the chest and tucking the arms underneath the body, it combats postural defects such as rounded shoulders and the cervical region of the spine, thus releasing pressure on nerves. The Fish Pose(Matsyasana) also expands the rib cage fully, increasing the lung capacity and aids in deep breathing.



Detailed Technique: Lie down flat on the back. Do Padamasna while lying down. Now catch both of the toes of the feet with the hands & pull them a little in such a manner that the elbows may rest on the ground. Start breathing as deeply as possible. Stay in this position for a while. Keeping both the hands near the shoulders bend the neck backward to the maximum so much so that the crown of the head may touch the floor.

Now grasp the toes again with the hands. Try to raise the buttock too. Normalize the breath , after a while bring back the hips to the ground & thereafter the elbows. Now message the throat gently with both the hands. Using the hands for leverage , bring back the neck to the original position & keep it straight. Now place both the hands under the hips. Place the palms on the ground.

Using the elbows for leverage raise the trunk upward. Raise also the knees a little. Start moving the head slowly towards the left & then towards the right , each side three times. Also rotate the head gently & slowly in a circular movement both clockwise & anti clockwise. Bring back the neck slowly on the ground & undo the Padamasana. Relax the body & take the rest in Shavasana . After normalizing the breath , make it deeper & deeper. Deep breathing will stimulate the inner organs.

Benefits of The fish pose(Matsyasana) : By bending the neck backward the trachea(wind pipe) remains absolutely clear & it holes free from any obstruction. As its mouth widens , the lungs are filled with oxygen & this asana facilitates the maximum oxygenation of the blood. As the lungs are stretched , such ailments as asthma . cough & many respiratory disorders are cured.

Gonads in the lower abdomen are stretched & toned up. Digestive organs are benefited & constipation relieved. Spine becomes resilient & healthy , backache is eliminated & the chest expands. By performing this posture constantly in Padamasana , one gets relief fro diseases like gout , tonsils , diabetes , mental disorders , nose & ear pain etc. Nervous debility & tremors caused by gastric disorders in the body are cured.

By rotating the neck left & right & in a circular movement , the cervical region is immensely benefited. Besides , it removes all obstructions in blood vessels supplying blood to the brain. It also tones the nervous system, the kidneys, the stomach and intestines, the pelvic organs, and the nerves connected with the sex functions. This posture is also beneficial for people suffering with asthma.
