More energy is spent in hyperthyroidism while resting

Meaning : One often comes across persons who are very skinny despite eating quite well. They may be consuming a very rich diet but their waistline never seems to respond to eating habits while others are likely to think that such people are really blessed, reality is otherwise. In fact, such people may be suffering from a disease known as Hyperthyroidism, which results from a deranged thyroid gland.

Function of Thyroid gland : In some cases, the thyroid gland, one of the most important determinants of metabolism (the rate at which the body spend energy) of an individual, starts producing an excess of the thyroid hormones, namely T 3 & T 4. These two hormones are responsible for regulating the metabolism of the whole body. The function of the thyroid gland is in turn regulated by the pituitary gland, which secretes hormones named TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone).

This TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) stimulates the functioning of the thyroid gland in response to the levels of the circulating thyroid hormones, T3 & T4. If the levels of these hormones increase, the pituitary secretes less TSH, thereby reducing the levels of the thyroid hormones in the blood. In case, the thyroid hormones levels are low, the pituitary secretes more TSH leading to an increase in the production of the hormones by the thyroid gland.

Causes of Hyperthyroidism : An increase in the levels of thyroid hormones is medically known as hyperthyroidism. This causes the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) of the body to rise. Even in the resting state, the body spends much more energy than any other normal individual. This leads to loss in weight. Also the patient feels hungry shortly after a heartly meal. There is general weakness, felt more while climbing stairs.

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism : There may be frequent stools, with patients going to clear their bowels 4-5 times in a day, more so immediately after eating any thing. The patient always feels hot & sweating is profuse. Disturbances in sleep could also be present in some people. In woman there may be disturbances of the periods, something menses being delayed for months on end. Some females have very scanty menses. The skin is usually warm & moist with a smooth feel.

In younger patients symptom of nervousness is prominent & he or she might be restless & anxious. There may be trembling of the hands. Breathlessness & palpitations are common features even in young patients. In older patients angina or symptoms of heart failure may be present. Nails may separate from the bed of the finger, more commonly of the ring finger.
